{"id":7684,"date":"2021-07-14T19:34:21","date_gmt":"2021-07-15T00:34:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.surrealresolution.com\/?p=7684"},"modified":"2021-07-14T19:34:21","modified_gmt":"2021-07-15T00:34:21","slug":"review-vince-staples-vince-staples","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.surrealresolution.com\/index.php\/2021\/07\/14\/review-vince-staples-vince-staples\/","title":{"rendered":"Review: VINCE STAPLES &#8211; Vince Staples"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You know, it\u2019s been a while since we heard a project from Vince Staples, and he has been making some interesting movies in the past few years from having his own Adult Swim show <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lazor Wulf <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(an excellent absurd show!) to appearing in movies like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MFKZ <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(also excellent) and even switched labels from Def Jam to Motown. Now we have his 3rd studio album <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vince Staples\u2026<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> yes, this is a self-titled album, and it\u2019s not the only one coming up soon as he&#8217;s got another album titled <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ramona Park Broke My Heart <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">whose release date is unknown <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at the moment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FM!, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this is another 22-minute project with production primarily from Kenny Beats, and like prior albums, the content of this one focuses a lot on where Vince came from, his hardships, and friends that are no longer with him, escaping the gang life but going further into that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s blatant in the first track and 2nd single, \u201cAre You With That?\u201d and then comes the 2nd track and 1st single released, \u201cLaw of Averages\u201d focusing on how since he got famous, people he knew have been bugging him for money.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"747\" height=\"421\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oTri3zbX-R8?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everyone that I&#8217;ve ever known asked me for a loan<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leave me &#8216;lone, .44 Stallone, get a nigga gone<br \/>\n<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/genius.com\/23308734\/Vince-staples-law-of-averages\/Raging-bull-this-not-paid-in-full-but-i-kill-my-own\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Raging Bull<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, this not <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paid in Full<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but I kill my own<\/span><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/genius.com\/23471848\/Vince-staples-law-of-averages\/Yes-i-love-you-cause-you-black-but-dont-love-your-ass-like-that\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, I love you &#8217;cause you black but don&#8217;t love your ass like that<\/span><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/genius.com\/23301600\/Vince-staples-law-of-averages\/I-will-put-you-on-a-shirt-if-you-fuck-me-out-my-racks\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I will put you on a shirt if you fuck me out my racks<\/span><\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paranoia and PTSD also play into the lyrics here with \u201cSundown Town,\u201d as the track is named after a town where after dark, black people are more likely to be killed, and he expresses those feelings of knowing when something is going to pop.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Lost too many friends, to the down the streets, I can&#8217;t pretend<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That I&#8217;ll make amends, I know that the blood gon&#8217; spill again<br \/>\n<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/genius.com\/23464654\/Vince-staples-sundown-town\/Hangin-on-them-corners-same-as-hangin-from-a-ceiling-fan-when-i-see-my-fans-im-too-paranoid-to-shake-they-hands\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hangin&#8217; on them corners, same as hangin&#8217; from a ceiling fan<\/span><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/genius.com\/23464654\/Vince-staples-sundown-town\/Hangin-on-them-corners-same-as-hangin-from-a-ceiling-fan-when-i-see-my-fans-im-too-paranoid-to-shake-they-hands\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I see my fans, I&#8217;m too paranoid to shake they hands<\/span><\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other themes are touched on here like on \u201cThe Apple and The Tree\u201d where Vince\u2019s mother lies on the stand to defend his father, even though he probably did whatever he did. It\u2019s more about showing loyalty to your family and crew much like Vince did, hence the saying &#8216;the apple doesn&#8217;t fall far from the tree&#8217;. There&#8217;s also &#8220;Take Me Home&#8221; where he goes about on how he lives a straight edge life (he doesn&#8217;t smoke or drink) and how whenever he spots violence happening around him when he drives, he puts on some music with a gun on the passenger seat to drown it out, with the hook from Foushe\u00e9 aka the lone feature here, going like:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div class=\"Lyrics__Container-sc-1ynbvzw-8 eOLwDW\" data-scrolltrigger-pin=\"true\"><a class=\"ReferentFragment__ClickTarget-oqvzi6-0 iFcdSA\" href=\"https:\/\/genius.com\/23463641\/Vince-staples-and-foushee-take-me-home\/Ooh-ta-take-me-home-like-i-clicked-my-shoes\"><span class=\"ReferentFragment__Highlight-oqvzi6-1 dJKlxS\">Ooh, ta-take me home like I clicked my shoes<\/span><\/a><br \/>\nI&#8217;m up, the price is sky high<br \/>\n<a class=\"ReferentFragment__ClickTarget-oqvzi6-0 iFcdSA\" href=\"https:\/\/genius.com\/23468036\/Vince-staples-and-foushee-take-me-home\/Please-save-your-two-cents-im-fine\"><span class=\"ReferentFragment__Highlight-oqvzi6-1 eZruqd\">Please save your two cents, I&#8217;m fine<\/span><\/a><br \/>\nI got no sensor, I vibe like<br \/>\nOoh ah, ooh ah<br \/>\nOnly abide by my rules<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"RightSidebar__Container-pajcl2-0 ifhLXc\">Meaning that you should save your advice and realize that I&#8217;m fine. Don&#8217;t worry about me, all right?<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Production-wise, Kenny Beats made some of his standard best beats for Vince, fitting well with the moody vibe given of the subject matter he spits on here. There&#8217;s one beat that&#8217;s a low-key slapper with &#8220;Lil Fade,&#8221; and the way he spits on here goes well on this production.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Lil&#8217; fade (Yeah), trippin&#8217; get ya whip sprayed (Uh-huh)<br \/>\nChoppa where my bitch stay<br \/>\nShoot shit (Yeah),\u00a0<a class=\"ReferentFragment__ClickTarget-oqvzi6-0 iFcdSA\" href=\"https:\/\/genius.com\/23494590\/Vince-staples-lil-fade\/Pocket-full-of-blue-strips-blue-strips-blow-it-and-im-still-paid\"><span class=\"ReferentFragment__Highlight-oqvzi6-1 eZruqd\">pocket full of blue strips (Blue strips)<br \/>\nBlow it and I&#8217;m still paid<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(Dead homies, yeah)<br \/>\nAct out (Yeah), lucky if you packed out<br \/>\nReally what I rap &#8217;bout (Let&#8217;s go)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"747\" height=\"421\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MIqqeDZgAXA?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>All-in-all, Vince Staples delivers another solid album.
